Nurturing Minds, Filling Hearts, Flourishing Together
    History

At Trinity St Mary’s CofE Primary School, we want children to develop a curiosity and fascination about the past and understand how history has shaped the world we live in today.

Through engaging and inspiring history lessons, children explore the lives of significant people, important events and different civilisations from the past. We encourage children to ask questions, think critically and develop a deeper understanding of how people lived in different periods of history and how this continues to influence our lives today.

At TSM, history helps children to:

    • develop a strong sense of identity and belonging,
    • understand and value different cultures and communities,
    • build empathy and respect for others,
    • and become thoughtful, reflective and informed learners.
    Early Years

In Nursery and Reception, children begin developing an understanding of the world around them through stories, play, discussion and exploration.

    Children learn about:

    • their own families and traditions,
    • changes over time,
    • people and places from the past,
    • and similarities and differences between communities and cultures.

Through exciting topics and practical experiences, children are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and develop curiosity about the world and its history.

    Key Stage 1

In Years 1 and 2, children begin to develop an understanding of chronology and explore important events, people and changes from the past.

    Children learn about:

    • life within living memory,
    • significant historical events and individuals,
    • changes over time,
    • and local history linked to their own community.

Lessons are designed to be engaging, interactive and meaningful, helping children develop confidence in discussing and understanding the past.

    Key Stage 2

In Years 3 to 6, children build a deeper understanding of British and world history through exciting topics and enquiry-based learning.

    Children explore:

    • the Stone Age,
    • Ancient Egypt,
    • the Romans,
    • Anglo-Saxons and Vikings,
    • local history,
    • and important periods and civilisations that have shaped the modern world.

Children are encouraged to investigate historical evidence, ask thoughtful questions, identify connections between different periods of time and develop their own interpretations of historical events.

At TSM, history lessons help children develop important skills including:

    • enquiry and investigation,
    • critical thinking,
    • discussion and communication,
    • interpretation of evidence,
    • and understanding chronology.

We use timelines, artefacts, high-quality texts, discussion and engaging resources to help bring history to life and inspire curiosity and excitement about the past.

Our curriculum also encourages children to reflect on how historical events and people continue to influence modern Britain and the diverse world we live in today.

At TSM, we believe history helps children develop curiosity, understanding and respect for the experiences of others while preparing them to become thoughtful and informed citizens of the future.
