    Phonics & Early Reading

At Trinity St Mary’s CofE Primary School, we are passionate about helping every child become a confident and enthusiastic reader from the very beginning of their learning journey.

We use the Department for Education approved phonics scheme, Bug Club, to support the teaching and learning of early reading and phonics across EYFS and Key Stage 1. Through daily phonics lessons, children develop the skills needed to recognise sounds, blend words and read with growing confidence and fluency.

At TSM, phonics lessons are designed to be engaging, interactive and enjoyable, helping children build strong foundations in reading and writing within a supportive and nurturing environment.

Children are provided with carefully matched Bug Club Book Bag Books which closely link to the phonics sounds and phase they are learning in school. This helps children practise and apply their developing reading skills successfully both at school and at home.

We strongly value the partnership between home and school and encourage families to read regularly with their children to help develop confidence, fluency and a lifelong love of reading.

Through Bug Club, families can also access hundreds of engaging online e-books that are carefully matched to the phonics sounds children have already learnt in class. Children can log in using their individual username and password to continue practising and enjoying reading at home.

If you have any questions or would like support with phonics or accessing Bug Club, please speak to Miss Brewster, who will be very happy to help.
