English & Oracy

At Trinity St Mary’s CofE Primary School, we believe that strong reading, writing and communication skills are at the heart of every child’s learning journey. We are passionate about helping children develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong love of language and literature.

Through high-quality, engaging and diverse texts, children are inspired to explore ideas, develop their imagination and express themselves with confidence. We provide rich opportunities for children to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills across all areas of the curriculum, helping them to become thoughtful communicators and enthusiastic learners.

At TSM, we want every child to leave our school as a confident reader, writer and speaker who is fully prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.

Writing

Writing is taught through our creative and engaging curriculum using carefully selected texts that inspire children to write for a range of purposes and audiences. Children are encouraged to develop their creativity, vocabulary and confidence while learning how to write clearly, accurately and effectively.

Writing opportunities are woven throughout the wider curriculum, allowing children to apply their skills across subjects and deepen their understanding through meaningful and purposeful learning experiences.

We aim to nurture children who enjoy writing, take pride in their work and can express their ideas with confidence and independence.

Reading

Reading is a central part of life at TSM and is given a very high priority throughout the school.

We strive to create a reading-rich environment where books, stories and language are celebrated every day. Children are encouraged to develop a love of reading for pleasure and are immersed in exciting, high-quality texts that inspire curiosity, imagination and discussion.

Through daily reading opportunities, guided reading, story time and whole-class texts, children develop:

• fluency and comprehension,
• vocabulary and communication skills,
• confidence and independence,
• and a lifelong enjoyment of books and storytelling.

We value the important partnership between home and school and encourage families to read regularly with their children to help foster positive reading habits and a love of literature.

At TSM, we believe reading opens doors to learning, creativity and opportunity and plays a vital role in helping every child flourish.

Oracy

Oracy is woven throughout school life at TSM and helps children develop the confidence to communicate effectively in a range of situations.

Children are encouraged to:

• share ideas and opinions confidently,
• listen respectfully to others,
• ask thoughtful questions,
• take part in discussions and debates,
• and present their learning with increasing confidence and clarity.

By developing strong oracy skills, children learn how to articulate their thoughts, collaborate with others and become confident, compassionate and reflective learners.
