    Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

In June, all children in Year 1 take part in the Phonics Screening Check – a short, friendly assessment that helps teachers understand how well children are developing their early reading skills. During the check, children read 40 words aloud to a familiar adult, including both real words and made-up “alien” words that test their ability to apply phonics knowledge independently. The check is carried out in a relaxed, one-to-one setting and most children see it simply as another opportunity to share their reading with a teacher.

Children who do not meet the expected standard in Year 1 will receive additional support in school and will retake the check in Year 2. The purpose of the screening is to identify any children who may benefit from further help with phonics and early reading.

At Trinity St Mary’s CE Primary School, our systematic phonics teaching, daily reading practice and nurturing approach ensure that children are well prepared. The most valuable support parents can provide is regular reading at home, encouraging children to sound out unfamiliar words and celebrate their growing confidence as readers.
