Year 1&2 - Anne Frank Class

Welcome to Anne Frank Class

A very warm welcome to Anne Frank Class!

This year is an exciting stage in your child’s learning journey as they continue to grow in confidence, independence and curiosity within Key Stage 1. For some children, this is their first year in KS1, while for others it is an important step towards the transition into Key Stage 2. We are looking forward to a year filled with exciting learning opportunities, creativity, discovery and personal growth.

In Anne Frank Class, we strive to create a nurturing, supportive and engaging environment where every child feels valued, encouraged and inspired to flourish both academically and personally. We work closely with families to help children develop confidence, resilience and a love of learning.

Below are some helpful ways you can support your child throughout the year.

Reading & Phonics

Reading is one of the most important skills children develop in Key Stage 1 and regular reading at home makes a huge difference to children’s confidence and progress.

We encourage families to:

  • listen to their child read daily,
  • discuss stories and ask questions about what they have read,
  • and record a comment in the reading record at least once each week.

Reading books and reading records should be brought into school every day and books will usually be changed on Mondays and Thursdays.

Children also take part in daily phonics sessions in school, and we encourage regular phonics practice at home, particularly in Year 1, to help build fluency, confidence and early spelling skills.

Mathematics & Times Tables

In mathematics, children are encouraged to develop confidence, fluency and problem-solving skills through practical and engaging learning experiences.

Children in Year 2 will continue developing recall of the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables, including related division facts. Regular practice at home helps children build confidence and supports their wider maths learning.

Children in Year 1 will continue practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s as they develop number fluency and understanding.

Homework & Spellings

Year 2 children will receive homework each Thursday, to be returned the following Monday.

Spellings for both year groups will be sent home each Friday and tested the following Friday morning.

Year 1 spellings will focus on Phase 5 phonics sounds and common spelling patterns, while Year 2 spellings will include common exception words and key spelling rules from the Year 2 curriculum.

Please ensure spelling books are brought into school each Friday ready for new spellings.

Physical Education (PE)

PE lessons take place on Thursday afternoons.

Children should come to school with their full PE kit, including:

  • house-coloured T-shirt,
  • blue shorts,
  • plain dark tracksuit bottoms for colder weather,
  • and suitable footwear such as plain black trainers or plimsolls.

Physical activity plays an important role in children’s wellbeing, confidence and teamwork and we encourage all children to participate fully.

Working Together

We value the important partnership between home and school and believe children achieve their best when families and staff work closely together.

If you have any questions, concerns or would like to discuss your child’s learning and wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact me through the school office or via Class Dojo.

Thank you for your continued support — we are looking forward to a fantastic year together in Anne Frank Class.

Best wishes,
Miss Castillo
